Ladies in Lavender
The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range from Massenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice." --Jerry McCulley

    Another great by Joshua Bell

This CD is very enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend it, especially if you have any other of Joshua Bell's music.
    Joshua Bell is Perfection!

This soundtrack CD is musical velvet by Joshua Bell and adds depth to this touching movie. Listening to it again and again, fills my soul with sweetness, intended only for those who feel to the core of the heart.
    Pure bliss

This soundtrack, with solo violin playing by Joshua Bell is a must have for anyone enjoys Classical Music. If you've seen the film, you will know what I mean. Nigel Hess' original composition :Fantasy for violin and orchestra, featured at the end of the movie is beautiful indeed.

The Phantom of the Opera (Original 1986 London Cast)
What's left to be said about Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera a decade after its premiere? That it's maddeningly ubiquitous? A stitch-up of various themes shoplifted from the Italian operatic repertoire? A critic-proof crowd pleaser that's probably being staged somewhere in the world as you read this? A megahit that will likely outlive Titanic in the pop-culture pantheon, Phantom has largely redefined--for better or worse--the manner in which modern musicals are conceived, staged, and marketed. Its influence has reached far beyond the traditional confines of London and Broadway. A favorite example: an abridged version that was the centerpiece of Los Angeles's longest-running transvestite revue, replete with 14-inch chandeliers and a man-playing-a-woman-playing-a-man in the title role. --Jerry McCulley

    the best

This is the best cd I have ever heard. I love the music it is great.
Mess up the Phantom ---> Awful recording

I love POTO in all its interpretations. I love the ALW musical. But the OLC cast does nothing for me. Every time I hear Crawford's nasal, whiny voice I want to bang my head against the wall. Brightman's "acting" is non-existant and the passion was left out completely. Buy the Canadian CD with Colm Wilkinson, the original Swedish recording or the movie-soundtrack. But skip this sterile "performance"....
An overblown mess ~ and insipid fans

When I read the review below mine I was close to lose my faith is people who can put their dislike for something in polite words. I've never seen such shallow and insipid bashing of a movie that is just as...good...as this mess. I like Leroux's story but Webber failed to capture its essence and most of its fans or "phans" fail to understand it too. The cast, except for Steve Barton, is below mediocre (Crawford should stick to comedy, Brightman needs lessons before she ever opens her mouth to sing again...) and the music is nothing but 2-3 themes which are repeated until even a ditz can hum along. Skip this awful mess and listen to the beautiful interpretation of Yeston and Kopit, or, even better, read the book. This recording is not a keeper and I could care less if the "phans" vote my review down. (Biased as they are)

One word on the movie: At least it's what it is, entertainment. And it doesn't take itself so seriously, plus I prefer it to be a rock-opera with edge instead of "Opera Lite" for those who fail to appreciate the real thing.

The Last Of The Mohicans: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
This is a production rife with odd pairings: English actor Daniel Day-Lewis joining up with the Mohawks; James Fenimore Cooper adapted by Michael Mann; disparate composers Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman teaming up. This last pairing seems a suspicious attempt to endow the score of this modern film adaptation of a junior high school literary evergreen with both a golden age of Hollywood dramatic bent (Jones) and a '90s-slick guitar-muzak veneer (Edelman). A strange amalgam that doesn't quite work. --Jerry McCulley

    Best Movie Score Ever

First off I have no musical knowledge whatsoever. I don't know what a stanza is and I don't what c flat means. I was completely lost in my mandatory music classes in grade school. In college I was offended that I had to take a music appreciation course. I managed to squeak by with a C because of lots of extra credit.

Why would I think to review something like this? I obviously cannot give any great insights into the music. I don't know why one part is riveting and another is tantalyzing.

What I do know is that this is simply an outstanding score (ok I do know it is called a score and not a soundtrack). This is how I judge music. If it sounds good then it is good. I don't care about the history or its purpose. Just the overall feel to it.

I have used this CD to relax to, to study to, and if I were a new age flake I might even meditate to it. Great CD buy it now.
    Jones scores a winner

I saw the movie as part of a date with a fellow musician. We were late to the cineplex and missed the original movie we'd wanted to see, so we saw the Last of the Mohicans instead. It was a great movie (and an okay date), but it was the score the moved me most of all.

I was entranced through the whole thing. Loved Jones' parts of the score with the theme that ran through all the movements. I bought this on cassette, and in that medium all his parts were conveniently on one side.

I have an extensive music collection with both cassettes and CDs with very few items doubling between the two. This is one of the few that I have in multiple formats because I enjoyed it that much.

One of my favorite movements of all orchestral music of all time is "Top of the World." The music advisor I had at the time, a very prolific composer, had a snobbish attitude toward film scoring. I brought "Top of the World" for him to hear, and he actually admitted liking that one when he generally doesn't like film music.

My only complaint if I have one at all is that the Clannad song "I Will Find You" is too short on the soundtrack. I distinctly remember it being much longer in the film itself. That is the version I would rather hear than something that is over much too soon.
    Original, unique and evocative

I enjoyed the Last of the Mohicans when I first saw the movie in Theatre. It is a powerful production; full of love, tragedy, and suspense.

A couple of years later, a friend loaned me the tape soundtrack. It was then that I realized the power of the film is entirely carried by the music. Each selection will evoke the emotion of that scene. A good soundtrack always recalls the movie and inspires the emotion. It is an understatement that Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman created a 'good' arrangement of music.

The unique factor for this soundtrack is that it stands on its own as a great collection of art. The arrangement of the sound tells a powerful story that can remain seperate from the film and maintain its' appeal. Everybody knows the soundtrack or at least has some familiarity with at least one selection from the CD.

I recommend this CD as a great improvement from the old audio tape, as an outstanding soundtrack and as a timeless collection of relaxing and passionate music.

    opposite of blender

Personally, I can't stand Blender. But Youth is a great album. I love it. Under Heaven Skies really should be a single, its a great song. But This song has a ton of great songs: Home, Satellite, General Attitude, How Do You Love...This is up there with Dosage and self titled in my opinion. This CD is nothing like Blender, so don't listen to those ppl, I don't know what they are talking about....
You guys that diss Youth, you have no freakin idea

All you guys that think Youth is just a part 2 of Blender you guys are on crack cocaine. Come on, you wouldnt even know good home grown rock if it hit you in the face, most bands around know are all a bunch of washed up indecent losers that sing about doing drugs and having sex and murdering people, thats retardism for you guys. Collective Soul is the best Rock band out there, i saw them for the first time live today and they blew the roof off the place, you guys just dont know how to appreciate good rock-n-roll, thats what its all about dudes and babes. I'm trying to see things from your point of view but i cant get my head shoved that far up my butt so maybe try me back when you actually learn to appreciate collective soul, theyre gonna go far in the business and they already have and they'll go farther. I dont see you guys who are dissing them out making music as good as collective soul's, why dont you go show them how much better you can do, but i doubt it will happen. You guys that are dissing them you guys suck. long live collective soul and good homegrown rock and roll. Youth is a great album, they go back to what makes them a band, youre all doing too much drugs to take the time to notice it.
Better Now is the Closest thing to Gel

When I popped in this CD, Better Now attacked my speakers like a stripped down Bowie song. The horns are a great addition to the normally tech sounding riffs of CS. The album overall is strong, I just wish they would dump all of the cheesey ballads which I never liked (I understand that others love them) If they would go for a full album of hard-powered rock tunes, they would reestablish themselves as one of the only survivors from the 90's (with Green Day, Foo Fighters)
